Since renovating my home a few years ago, efficiency and the cost of home heating has been on my mind. My old home came with oil heat, and though the price of the home was right the price tag for heat was high. This year I decided to switch things by getting some heat pumps installed. Finding a more efficient solution to heating my home was one thing, but I also wanted the house the be comfortable during the summer months.

WHY HEAT PUMPS?

This past spring I reached out to Presidential Ventilation , pioneers in Halifax's residential and commercial HVAC industry, to find out more about switching over to a heat pumps in my home and I was surprised at how easy and affordable the whole process would be. As a family business that has been running for over 25 years, they are experts at affordable home heating and cooling solutions and walked me through the process.

First a technician visited my home to check out the layout and air flow and where to best situate the heat pumps. They determined the size of the heat pump I would need on the main floor and the upper floor of my home and brought several catalogues for me to browse through for style and price point.

When deciding what kind of Daikin heap pump units to select and where to install them, it was important for me to not only make my heat pumps as efficient as possible, but also have them fit into the space and not distract from my décor. As a designer and renovator who is often posting images on my home on Social media, I really didn’t want a big heat pump unit to be the first thing you notice. I worked with Presidential Ventilation to select a modern Daikin unit that would fit in with my décor and to make sure the placement was effective and minimally intrusive.

I was thrilled that the new Daikin Models are sleek and simple and have a modern look that blends in beautifully, so I decided to go with 17 series wall mount.

Here are a few points I put together on How to Incorporate Heat pumps into your home décor:

  1. Pick the right unit, shape and size for your space

There are a variety of styles, shapes and sizes you can select for a heat pump. Some are square and can go lower on the wall, and other are long and narrow and are installed close to the ceiling. Presidential Ventilation helped me find the Daikin product in a shape a size that works with my décor and will effectively heat, cool and dehumidify my home.

2. Placement is EVERYTHING

I noticed that I don’t take a lot of photos of the patio door, and the light from the window blows out the image in the dining room space, so I wanted to inquire if it would be possible to install the large unit above the patio door.

3. Pick a location that is both effective and unintrusive.

Putting a heat pump in a bright location or near a space that is typically cold, can throw off the settings. Which means that even though I have the temperature set for 26 in the summer it will work harder and feel like 20. The open concept design of my main floor allows for the air flow to travel through the entire main level, which is great, because I only need one unit to cool it. And the sun only stays on the back of the house in the morning, so hopefully the temperature will read more accurately. The technician said as long as I understood the elements that might affect my temperature setting on the heat put, that we could use this location for the main unit, which would work on both a design and effectiveness level.

 4. Select colour and tone that blends with your wall paint

There are a variety of colours in heat pumps, if you have a white wall you will probably want to choose white, but if you have a grey wall they also have really modern looking style in darker tones, tone on tone is a fabulous look.

NOW ENJOY YOUR SPACE: Knowing you are cozy and saving money!

With the heat pump, supplementing my heat cost, cooling the house in the summer, and controlling the humidity. I can’t wait to feel the difference in the comfort level of my home.

ADDED VALUE

I’m also confident the heat pumps will raise the value of my home, especially when it comes to the price, I am getting per night during the summer with my Air BNB guests. I know this is going to positively effect my summer bookings and keep my listing and my reviews at the top!

Here are some more information on Heatpumps that I pulled from the Nova Scotia Power Website.

HOW THEY WORK

Heat pumps are a single system used to heat and cool your home. Air source heat pumps work by transferring heat energy from the air outside of your home to the air inside, keeping you warm on cold winter days. In the summer time, they work in reverse. They move the heat from inside your home and push it outside, turning it into a fully equipped air conditioner that keeps you cool and can also help dehumidify your home on muggy days.

THE WAYS TO SAVE

Heat pumps use less energy to operate than other heating and cool equipment. They are up to 300% efficient, which means for every dollar you spend on heating, you get up to three dollars worth of heat. When it comes to cooling, they’re twice as efficient as traditional air conditioning units so you’ll stay comfortable all summer long.
